Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, John White a intégré le corps des commandos britanniques et a participé à de nombreuses campagnes en Grèce et en Sicile (où il fut fait prisonnier par la Goring Panzerdivision durant une quinzaine dheures avant de séchapper).
Il débarque pour la première fois en France le 19 août 1942 sur la plage de Berneval-le-Grand dans le cadre de lopération Jubilee (aussi connue sous le nom de débarquement de Dieppe).
Le 6 juin 1944, il débarque avec la Troop 4 du Commando N°3 (1st Special Service Brigade) sur la plage de Sword Beach et participe successivement à la défense du fameux Pegasus Bridge puis de la batterie de Merville.
Il fut le dernier vétéran à lopération Jubilee pour le Commando N°3 à séteindre

During the Second World War, John White joined the British commando corps and took part in numerous campaigns: in North Africa, Cyprus, Greece and Sicily (where he was taken prisoner by the Goring Panzer Division for about fifteen hours before escaping).nHe landed for the first time in France on August 19, 1942 on the beach of Berneval-le-Grand as part of Operation Jubilee (also known as the Dieppe landing).nOn June 6, 1944, he landed with Troop 4 of Commando N°3 (1st Special Service Brigade) on the beach of Sword Beach and successively participated in the defense of the famous Pegasus Bridge and then of the Merville battery.nHe was the last veteran of Operation Jubilee for No. 3 Commando to die.
